Nobody around noticed the woman who had just appeared.
Although she was not wearing a flashy hat like Apricot, her black witch-like outfit was very conspicuous even by the standards of this world, and yet, nobody tried to even look at her.
However, they would try to avoid her if they were about to bump into her, so it did not seem like they were the least bit aware of her existence.
“Oh, sorry for the late greetings. Nice to meet you, Clo Heartfield. I’m Vert C, the sender of the letter.”
“Nice to meet you, Lady Vert. I have been greatly indebted to your Son.”
The only time he’s been of help was during the incident with the Orc Prince and if anything, I feel like he’s been an inconvenience to me more often than not, but I still greeted her with a deep bow.
“Oh, so you know me. Also, you don’t have to call me ‘Lady’ and you don’t have to talk humbly either. It’s fine in public, but we are having a private conversation right now.”
“… I understand, Mrs. Vert.”
I raised my head and repositioned myself to face Mrs. Vert again.
Yellow-green hair and green eyes. Despite her age, she looked young enough to pass for someone in her twenties. And just like Ms. Mary said, she was a beauty… Well, in this life, most people tend to look younger than in my previous life regardless of their sex.
Her eyes were somewhat similar to Chartreuse, but rather than his (outwardly) composed aura, she had a mysterious air about her, as if a witch’s outfit suited her very well. She was bewitching in a way.
“Seriously, isn’t it bad manners to show a love letter to a stranger, especially a woman?”
Lady Vert shrugged and said ‘love letter’ without any hesitation. I panicked at a Viscountess saying something like this here and looked around, but for some reason nobody was paying attention to us.
“Oh, don’t worry. I’m just using [Space Preservation]. I’m also using [Gaze Guidance], so I’m sure we’re only perceived as much as stones by the roadside.”
“… I see.”
“So I think there would be no problems even if you wanted to take off my clothes… if that excites you, I’ll try my best.”
“I won’t take them off and you don’t have to do it either!”
Dammit, Cyan. I’ll make you answer for this later.
In any case, I don’t know the details, but I guess I don’t have to worry about it.
It’s not good to be too trusting, but since everybody is still avoiding us and nobody is even trying to look at us despite the fact that I’m standing next to a person with such a conspicuous presence like Lady Vert, it seems certain that our recognition is being hindered.
“My apologies. I have neither the experience of receiving letters like this nor am I in the position to receive them. I apologize for casting doubt on you.”
“Sorry, I was just kidding. Of course you would be wary if you received a letter from somebody you’ve never met. Even if it was given to you by an acquaintance.”
So it was her who told Ms. Kriemhild to give me the letter.
Are they acquaintances? Or did she just tell Ms. Kriemhild to give it to me? Ms. Kriemhild did react with a ‘guh!’ when she gave the letter to me, so maybe she just handed it me without thinking after being told that somebody wanted to give a love letter to me. Knowing her, she’d accept while thinking ‘I trust Mr. Clo!”
“Excuse me, about the contents of that letter…”
“Yeah, I’m serious. I’m interested in you. To the point that it would not be an exaggeration to say that I like you.”
“… I recall that your Husband and Son are still alive, Mrs. Vert.”
I’ve forgotten his name, but I’m pretty sure Lady Vert has a Husband who’s the current Knight Commander.
I haven’t heard anything about him passing away, and I’m sure that his Son is still in good health, probably madly (calmly) cheering for Ms. Mary in the arena at the moment.
“Of course I also love my Husband, Claire. However, I’m interested in you in two different ways.”
“Two ways?”
So it was Sir Claire. Come to think of it, I think that was his name.
But what did she mean by ‘being interested in two different ways’? I’m unfortunately useless when it comes to magic, and I doubt the Archwizard Mrs. Vert would notice any magical talent in me.
In that case, it must have something to do with my physical abilities. My physical abilities haven’t changed that much compared to my previous life, but they seem to be better than average, so maybe something caught her eye during the scuffle earlier… I hope she’s not going to tell me that I looked sturdy enough to withstand human experimentation. There are rumors like that too.
“Clo… No, Clo and Mary Sue. What are the two of you?”
“—–“
Her words caught me off guard and for a moment I could not talk or breathe.
The mysterious atmosphere from before was gone, and her gaze was now peering right through me with a sharpness that seemed to not tolerate any lies.
In which sense — is she asking this?
“With all due respect, your question has so many implications that I can’t answer it, Mrs. Vert. It’s like… a Zen dialogue.”
That’s right, I can’t answer her.
Is Mrs. Vert asking this because she’s a reincarnator like me and Ms. Mary who knows about Ring of Fire? Or is she asking because she’s not a reincarnator, but has doubts about our actions?
I can’t answer unless I know that.
“No, I’m sorry. It seems like I’ve troubled you. I am certainly curious about that, but it’s more of an afterthought. There’s something else I’m really curious about.”
However, Mrs. Vert easily backed down.
As if the previous question didn’t really matter, she gave a refined smile and reset the tense atmosphere back to normal.
“Something you are really curious about?”
“Yeah, that’s right. The question I just asked was in a sense that I’m curious about the girl who my idiot Son has hots for and the Husband of the noblewoman who he has troubled greatly. I wanted to ask about it personally… No, there’s something else I’m interested in.”
What does she mean? Mrs. Vert has an easygoing air about her, just like Ms. Schwarz, but when it comes to shadiness, she has an upper hand. I don’t think that the question she just asked is the kind that can be brushed off as an afterthought… but Mrs. Vert was smiling as if she really didn’t care.
…I can’t let my guard down.
“What do you mean?”
“That’s right, I’m talking about my feelings for you, which are strong enough to make me write you a love letter despite my age.”
So the contents of the letter, which talked about falling in love with me and not being able to take her eyes off my manly figure, was the other point of her interest.
The earlier question made me wary, but unfortunately I have no interest in stealing somebody’s Wife or cheating. It reminds me of the woman (my Mother), whom I hate.
Mrs. Vert is certainly a beautiful woman and would still be very popular even now, and a lustful demon like Khaki would gladly take her on the offer, but I have no intention of responding to her feelings.
“I’m sorry, but accepting your feelings is something I—“
“I know. I knew from the beginning that my feelings would not be reciprocated. But love isn’t something that can be easily suppressed.”
… Well, I understand that feeling.
If like and dislike were emotions that could be controlled, we wouldn’t be having such a hard time. This is something I understand well as the territory Lord of Shiki, which is the home of many people whose feelings of love have gotten out of control.
“So, I want you to let me confess, Clo Heartfield. About things I love about you.”
“…”
I don’t know if she’ll be satisfied, but I can at least listen.
To be honest, I shouldn’t even let her talk about it. It’s obviously not a good look for a Viscountess to confess love to a married Baron with a child. Even if she’s using some mysterious power to prevent others from noticing us, it’s still not a good thing… however, given my status, it’s hard to reject her… damn, this really is difficult.
“Ever since I saw your fighting figure, it has been burned into my brain and won’t go away. Yes, your heroic figure as you fought your opponent with nothing but your body.”
That does make me happy to hear as a man but even so—
“I thought it was truly wonderful. That’s right— I fell in love with your well-trained body.”
— Hm, what’s that? I have a bad feeling about this.
“Ah, what a truly – wonderful body. It’s so tempting. Let me touch it, let me lick it, let my rub my cheeks against it! Let me feel that body from up close!!”
I fled like a hare.
It was probably the fastest dash I’ve ever made.
