Below, the wolf king with his burned-off tail struggled to get up. Its eyes filled with grief.

No pack and no tail, all because of those damned humans!

He wanted revenge but had no power to take it. Humans were too strong, plunging him into despair.

But then he recalled Xu Hei’s order. “Tell me if you see any signs of humans.”

He never took the order seriously, but now, one thought alone consumed him.

“I need to find the snake!”

The wolf king called the remaining of his pack, telling them to find Xu Hei.

The wolves scattered, scouring the mountain for the snake’s trace.

…

Xu Hei was restless these days, unable to calm down to train his magical arts. He felt something was coming and it wouldn’t give him peace.

Roaming the mountain a couple of times and grabbing a snack or two, the feeling only grew worse.

The birds were flying and the animals scrambled away, scared.

This only happened in a heavy thunderstorm, as animals were scared of thunder.

“Something isn’t right.” Xu Hei had a bad feeling.

A gray wolf spotted him in the distance and left. Moments later, he heard barking growing louder and louder, until the Moon Wolf appeared, panting.

The wolf king was burnt black, had a bald tail, and yelped in joy at seeing Xu Hei. But his eyes were distressed.

“Humans?” Xu Hei asked.

“Awo!” The wolf king nodded.

Xu Hei sped for his turf at once.

The snake catchers were knocking on his door, understanding snakes better than fellow snakes did. Xu Hei could not escape.

He couldn’t avoid them forever. He could either leave his turf and flee, or kill his pursuers!

Xu Hei was no reckless snake, fleeing the moment he knew winning was impossible.

The wolf king led Xu Hei to where he found them. There were scorch marks on the ground and faint traces of Spiritual Energy.

“They’re quite strong. The strike they used is around half my Fireball.” Xu Hei pondered.

The user was around Mu Yun’s level.

Since he could kill Mu Yun, they wouldn’t have just sent someone of his level. Their party had to have someone stronger among them.

Xu Hei spread his Divine Sense towards his cave. He hoped the tree and the white snake were safe.

For the first time, he cared about someone else.

His Divine Sense made contact with another Divine Sense. The owner started and rushed to his location in a moment. The youth wore black python robes and held a Thunder Seal.

Mu Lei activated it without hesitation.

Whoosh!

A thunderbolt shot straight for Xu Hei, who ducked into the ground. The explosion left a thirty-meter-wide crater.

Xu Hei was shocked at how this youth had Mu Yun’s cultivation but was far stronger.

“Was it you, worm, that killed my elder brother?”

Mu Lei scorned. [Flood Dragon? They don’t look anything alike. Was he wrong? This is clearly a Black Yin Snake.]

He obeyed his master by waiting out the prey while his master searched with the compass.

And finally, his patience paid off!

Chen Daoling had given him plenty of defensive magic treasures. Armored to the teeth, there was no way he’d end up like Mu Yun.

But to be safe, he took out the sending jade talisman, ready to throw it.

His movement halted, for he found Xu Hei to be fleeing.

“Fleeing?” Mu Lei was stunned.

“Master told me not to fight you but delay you for fifteen minutes until he arrives.”

Mu Lei’s eyes flashed and knew it was for his safety, to die at the the hands of the demon snake. But seeing how the snake was in the 4th layer of Awareness Stage, two layers below him, he saw no danger.

He was a snake catcher who killed demon snakes on the same level as him. If he couldn’t handle even this guy, he’d have no right to call himself a snake catcher.

“Was Junior Brother Zhao right? Is this snake that crafty and skilled enough to fight above his level? Is it faking weakness to bait me and finish me off afterward?” Mu Lei was very cautious.

He jumped back a couple of steps and activated the sending jade talisman on the sly.

He then came out faking arrogance. “A mere 4th layer Awareness Stage demon doesn’t need Master’s attention. I alone am enough to kill you!”

He rushed in Xu Hei’s direction, chasing after him. Mu Lei was certain the snake was waiting him out.

His elder brother, a peak 6th layer Qi Refining cultivater wouldn’t have died otherwise. The snake was sneaky!

These wretched tactics wouldn’t work on him, for he had plenty of aces!

He even signaled his master to come. There would be no escape.

“Come out, I’ve found you!”

His Divine Sense locked on Xu Hei’s position, who was swimming through the ground at great speed.

Mu Lei’s eyes flashed. He slapped two talismans on his legs and chased with Earthen Motion.

He was giving the fake impression he was using his full speed when it was just half, leaving the other half for contingency.

Xu Hei did the same, only using twenty percent of his speed to bait him.

“This guy’s speed is less than half of Mu Yun’s. He’s doing it on purpose!” Xu Hei calculated.

[He’s so young but so devious, not a fool like Mu Yun.]

As for his obvious act of not needing his master, he only worked to prove his intent and actions.

His Master was coming!
