Ling Bao’er’s pretty eyes grew wide as saucers. Her small and tender face still frozen in a mask of disbelief. Her mind was blank, watching Li Xiao’s corpse. [That’s the elder of Evil Dragon Den, a terrible Golden Core cultivator, just died like this?]
Chen Changan ignored Ling Bao’er, finding it more pressing to search Li Xiao’s body.
He found his storage ring. “Shit, how am I supposed to use this without any cultivation?”
Chen Changan finally turned to the frozen girl. [Since I can’t do it myself, I’ll have to rely on her.]
He now took in her looks, his eyes shining. [She’s pretty cute, but she’s not scarface’s daughter, right?]
“Are you related with scarface?” Chen Changan woke Ling Bao’er from her shock.
She blinked, “Who’d ever be related to someone as ugly as him? He’s Li Xiao, an elder of Evil Dragon Den. I am Ling Bao’er, a Nine Swords Sect disciple.
“The Myriad Mountains have gone through great changes today and the sect believes an immortal treasure descended. We’ve come under Li Xiao’s ambush on our way and only I remained out of all the Nine Swords Sect disciples sent here. He killed the rest of them.”
Ling Bao’er’s looked downcast, but then she recovered, showing her respect and gratitude. “Thank you, senior, for saving me. Without you, he would’ve taken me to the Evil Dragon Den.”
She gave Chen Changan a curious glance. He had messy hair and was dirty, but Ling Bao’er had witnessed him doing the impossible.
That made all the difference on her impressionable mind, her image of him nothing short than that of an unimaginable expert.
It was the only logical explanation for a Golden Core cultivator like Li Xiao to die like nothing.
Ling Bao’er didn’t want to know his real strength either. [A dreaded Nascent Soul existence maybe?]
Ling Bao’er gasped. From what she heard, Serene Province had yet to have another Nascent Soul cultivator for centuries. Even her father, the current Sect Leader of the Nine Sword Sect, was stuck at the peak of Golden Core, the 9th layer, for centuries and unable to make the slightest progress. To think she would find such a legend on Soaring Immortal Mountain, just outside the Myriad Mountains.
Chen Changan was oblivious to Ling Bao’er’s thoughts, giving her Li Xiao’s ring. “Scarface is dead. Can you open his storage ring?”
Ling Bao’er blinked, lost. Still processing Chen Changan’s intentions. “After Li Xiao died, his mark faded. The storage ring had no owner and can be opened, yes.”
Chen Changan eased his breath. “Then can you take something to eat from it?”
[Nascent Soul cultivators are erratic, with none able to make sense of their actions or find their real intent.]
Ling Bao’er thus agreed, “Sure,” and looked for some food in the storage ring.
She found spiritual treasures, pills and ingredients as she searched. [Li Xiao is truly the boss of Evil Dragon Den. A strong Golden Core cultivator has so many riches.]
Ling Bao’er held not an ounce of greed though, she knew that all of these belonged to the senior before her.
Chen Changan was nibbling on some rations she took out while Ling Bao’er stared at him.
“What’s with that look?”
Ling Bao’er plopped at his feet.
“What are you doing?” Chen Changan blinked at her prostrating, his interest in the food gone.
Ling Bao’er pleaded, “Senior, saving someone is very serious.”
“Why?”
“It means senior and I are destined to meet.”
Chen Changan bit on his rations, skeptical, “You call this fate?”
Ling Bao’er nodded.
“Absolutely. Of the many people in the world, I have found senior and even got saved. How can it be anything but fate?”
Chen Chang’an looked pensive, “You may be onto something there.”
“Senior, as we’re fated, might you take me on as a disciple?”
“Make you my disciple?”
Chen Changan was dumbstruck, floored by Ling Bao’er’s sudden request.
“Senior, you saved me and, even if you don’t accept, at least allow me to stay by your side and serve you.” Ling Bao’er was dead serious.
Nascent Soul cultivators hardly walked among common people. They were the strongest on the Nine Province Continent and taking one as master would be the fortune of a lifetime.
She had to avail this chance at all costs.
Chen Changan scratched the back of his head, still perplexed. He did feel rather lonely all by himself in this ruined temple. [It’ll be nice to have some company.] Especially if it came in a pretty package as this little girl. He was more than happy to take her in, yet he sighed.
[I may be strong, but only in the Absolute Domain.]
By leaving its range, even the frail Ling Bao’er could put him into the ground with a couple of punches. [And what am I supposed to teach her?]
Chen Changan was taken back to his first life. [What a failure I was.]
In his twenty plus years before ending up here, he had done nothing but stay cooped up in his room, playing games and fiddling on his phone with card games and mahjong. He had no skills or any real knowledge to speak of.
Chen Changan was frowning.
Ling Bao’er tensed, [Is senior going to refuse? Of course, senior is an ultimate expert so how could he take me as a disciple just like that?]
Chen Changan didn’t want to have a disciple since he had nothing to teach, but thinking from a different angle, he had one serious issue.
He could stay in the Absolute Domain, but that would not keep his belly stuffed. [How am I to brave the outside dangers to look for food and water as I am?]
