Anything that can go wrong will go wrong.
Just now, Xu Hei was worried about when the Snake Fruit would ripen, yet it ended up having the worst possible timing.
Its aroma seeped into the ground, and Xu Hei made the prompt decision to swallow the three Snake Fruits whole.
“Eh?” Mu Yun widened as he snapped his gaze below.
He sensed the vague aura of a mature Snake Fruit from somewhere underground.
“Beneath us!”
He jumped and slipped through the earth using a common cultivator magical art, Earthen Motion.
Starting with mid Qi Refining Stage, one could learn magical arts pertaining to the five elements, what mortals called immortal magic. This was the defining difference between early and mid levels.
An early Qi Refining cultivator could only make use of talismans, magic treasures, and brute force.
“Underground?” Zhao Wenzhuo’s eyes flashed and frowned.
“Senior Sister Song, forgive my early presumptuousness. I apologize.
“We don’t know who’s down there. It’s best that we leave at once and avoid any mishap.”
Zhao Wenzhuo cupped his hands.
Song Shiyu said nothing as she left coldly.
Zhao Wenzhuo’s eyes went frosty as he followed.
Xu Hei didn’t use his Divine Sense, but he could still feel the rumbling earth around him. Not to mention the sinking feeling he got.
“He’s coming down with Earthen Motion!” The human knowledge he got told him of its use.
He was coming for the tree, so Xu Hei bit on it and made a run for it by digging.
Since he didn’t know Xu Hei’s exact location, Xu Hei moved in another direction.
Xu Hei dug for a bit then threw the tree away, focusing his all on digesting the Snake Fruits.
“Come on, come on! Hurry up already!” Xu Hei urged.
He was in the greatest danger of his life, chased down by a mid Qi Refining cultivator. Made worse by the fact that it was a human and not a demon.
Unlike the slow and muscle-brained demons, humans were sneaky and ten times more dangerous.
You never knew what trick they had up their sleeves, if they hid their cultivation, or, in this particular case, someone watching their back.
The sheer amount of unknowns was impossible to account for.
It was in Xu Hei’s nature to avoid risks, committing to something only when he was damn sure of the outcome. Now he had a guy with a bigger cultivation, better magic treasures, and using magical arts to chase him down. Xu Hei stood no chance whatsoever.
[Flee for your life!]
Xu Hei bit on the tree and dug deeper into the ground, stopping after a while to refine the fruits.
In the meantime, his pursuer used Earthen Motion to get closer.
With Earthen Motion was slower than running on the ground, as well as taxing on his True Qi reserves, he took longer.
Mu Yun knew the other hid underground. Despite not locking on his target with his short Divine Sense, he caught its trail.
“He sure can run, as fast as me when using Earthen Motion. I wonder what’s his cultivation.
“Humph, like it matters! With Master’s magic treasure, I can kill anyone beneath Foundation Establishment!”
Mu Yun concluded the other had to be a fresh mid Qi Refining cultivator to not even show his face. [He has no self-confidence.]
He was determined to catch up at all costs.
“You think you can just steal from Snake Catchers and walk away? You’re dead!”
Mu Yun took a recovery pill and sped up, swimming through the earth.
Xu Hei ran for his dear life, entering a digging frenzy.
“Refine, heaven damn it!” Xu Hei raged.
This time, he felt it actually listened.
The Demon God Cauldron’s sucked up with extreme force, milking the Snake Fruit for all it worth. It was so fast the fruit shrank under the naked eye.
Xu Hei perked up. [Finally!]
With Demon God Cauldron picking up the slack, he could focus on fleeing.
As the Spiritual Energy haze inside the cauldron was full, Xu Hei’s tail sported extra dark golden scales. When the eight scale appeared, his speed got a boost.
It didn’t stop there, forming the ninth in the blink of an eye.
It halted on the ninth, as if it were some mystical number, while the Spiritual Energy haze no longer grew.
Xu Hei was now at the peak 3rd layer of Awareness Stage, or peak 3rd layer Qi Refining Stage in human terms.
Next was the mid-level.
The remaining Snake Fruits were getting digested as well, the Spiritual Energy expanding and contracting, unable to punch that wall to the next level.
Xu Hei ground his teeth and bit off a branch and half the tree’s bark, swallowing them.
The result was excruciating pain.
Like quenching a red-hot metal, the Demon God Cauldron’s Spiritual Energy haze expanded like boiling water, faster than he could cope.
As it reached the very limit, the haze collapsed into itself, forming a minute drop of Spiritual Energy liquid.
Xu Hei’s body was transforming, growing tougher, harder, and finally bigger after having not grown for a year.
Hiss~
Xu Hei screamed, unable to move.
As the Spiritual Energy shrank, his body was changing. His old skin was shed, making room for a stronger and tougher one.
Shedding was like having a new life. Each advancement Xu Hei had was followed by shedding.
Mu Yun stopped fifteen meters away, looking dumbstruck. The response he got for the Divine Sense left him shellshocked.
“T-this…”
He was still doubting himself, needing a long while of repeated checks to believe his senses.
His mind was on the fritz as well, unable to cope with the fact that he had been chasing a bloody snake for the entire day! [That’s no sneaky cultivator, but a damn snake!]
He knew the demons’ cultivation was called the Awareness Stage.
But no demon was that aware! There had never been a record of a demon of all things, biting on a tree and fleeing by digging. [That’s no awareness, but damn sentience!]
What really threw him for a loop was the clues that the tree had been dug up by a human. How did it ended up in a snake’s mouth?
Mu Yun’s mind was overwhelmed with all these questions, making him hesitate.
A sudden radical idea came to him—some almighty being reincarnated in this demon. It was just too insane of an idea, so he ignored it at once.
“I must capture it. Someone back at the base might want it!”
Mu Yun’s gaze took a fervent tint of greed.
