Besides jade slips about magical arts, the storage bag contained plenty of talismans, pills, a magic treasure, and a Snake Fruit Tree.
There was also a book, Serpent Records, detailing thousands of snakes and their features, as well as over a hundred demon snakes. They were species the snake catchers encountered.
Xu Hei gave it a quick look, pausing over his description.
“The Black Yin Snake is slightly poisonous, likes dark places, reaching two meters in length at maturity and up to five meters if it’s a demon…
“The strongest specimen the snake catchers met was a peak Foundation Establishment demon, eighteen meters long and nurturing demon fire within, allowing it to breathe poisonous flames that can kill a mortal on hit.
“The thirteenth leader stepped in, killing and turning it into a pill.”
Xu Hei was shocked.
“I’m a Black Yin Snake! But why isn’t there any mention in here about the scales on my tail?” Xu Hei wondered.
He found that once matured, a Black Yin Snake would eat fire ingredients to nurture demon fire. Snake handlers should use discretion when feeding their snakes.
There were even some fire ingredients being illustrated in the jade slip.
“Fire ingredients? I seem to have met one on my way back.”
Xu Hei recalled seeing a red vine on a cliff, but since he sensed a strong demonic aura nearby, he didn’t venture in, not with his scales still yet to regrow.
All precious ingredients had demons guarding them.
To be safe, Xu Hei planned on taking a trip after his scales grew back.
Until then, he’d stay put.
The rations and pills he found in the storage bag would keep him going for a long time.
The Snake Fruit Tree was missing a branch and had no leaves, but was very much alive. Xu Hei picked a spot with dirt and planted it.
As for the Beast Trapping Ring, he replaced the Divine Sense mark with his own.
After thorough experimentation, he found the hoop would take control of any creature, so long as it stuck its neck.
Humans were no different.
The control is only applied to the body and not the mind.
Xu Hei turned to the last item, a golden jade slip.
It was the only item he couldn’t scan with Divine Sense. Probably sealed.
His curiosity paled in comparison with his paranoia, however, so he smashed it with his tail, just in case it had a tracking feature placed on it.
The jade cracked and released a golden mote before vanishing.
Xu Hei kept smashing it to powder and threw the remains into the pond.
“First things first, I need to cultivate safety arts. Earthen Motion and Water Motion take priority!
“Next is Fireball, to erase any bodies.
“And lastly, Attraction. This way I can grab things from afar and don’t have to keep using my tail or mouth to carry them.”
With a plan in mind, he began his training montage.
As for Windblade, Thunderbolt, and Turtle Breath, advanced magical arts, the jade slip said they were trainable at the late Qi Refining Stage.
Xu Hei lay on the ground and chanted in his mind. His Spiritual Energy moved through his meridians in precise patterns, forming a seal.
“Earthen Motion!”
With a thought, his belly sank an inch into the ground.
Spurred on by the fruits of the very first try, Xu Hei thought himself talented.
…
A hundred miles away, at the Valley of Serpents, Chen Daoling reappeared. This time he held a compass.
Instead of pointing north, it divined its target’s direction. He had to fork out a fortune to have a friend from Celestial Monitoring Bureau lend it to him.
Chen Daoling activated it and a black snake image appeared.
The image was depicted with Zhao Wenzhuo’s Divine Sense, eighty percent similar to Xu Hei.
The compass spun until finally, it pointed in one direction, swaying before stopping.
“It would be more precise if you have its skin or blood. Going by its image alone, the Heaven’s Will Compass can’t get a perfect lock on it.” His friend told him.
Chen Daoling’s face fell. So he tuned it to the Snake Catchers’ cultivation method jade slip but came out empty, proving it was destroyed.
“What a sneaky little demon. I refuse to believe I can’t find you!”
Chen Daoling searched all over the Valley of Serpents for some trace of blood or anything belonging to his target.
…
A month flashed by, time Xu Hei spent cooped up and training.
He was by no means an expert with Earthen Motion but knew enough to use it. He was even faster than Mu Yun when driving it with Spiritual Energy.
He clearly had some talent in magical arts, practically a human’s.
Xu Hei’s only disadvantage was True Qi.
As a fresh 4th layer Awareness Stage demon, the bare minimum level needed to train, he could only hold Earthen Motion active for fifteen minutes at most.
Enough to be considered an escaping art.
In regards to the Fireball, Xu Hei was stuck making tiny flames.
“Time to find that fire ingredient!”
Thinking of the Earthfire Vine, he was certain of getting it since his scales regrew and cultivated a magical art.
Xu Hei left his cave and ventured into the great outdoors once more.
The blazing sun shone brighter on this fine June day.
With Xu Hei’s careful ministrations, the wildlife flourished in this past half a year. A casual look revealed a Bharal herd climbing a cliff.
Xu Hei snaked on one, leaving it to the Demon God Cauldron to refine, and ventured to his target on a full stomach.
Xu Hei took a short trip to reach it, only two hours.
The place was a barren rock formation, contributing to the rising heat. The red vine grew among it, sucking up all the heat in a hundred-meter radius.
The Earthfire Vine!
Xu Hei’s attempt at using Earthen Motion was cut short due to the hard rocks.
“No choice.”
Xu Hei took a deep breath and used his Divine Sense as he shot at full speed, leaving afterimages behind.
“Awo!”
A howl came from afar, followed by a silver figure racing to his location.
All precious spiritual herbs had demons watching over them, no exceptions.
