Xu Hei had limited knowledge, but he knew of some ancient records.
There were gods in ancient times that awakened a rock. If a rock could be aware, why not a demon?
[Gods still exist!]
“Mountain God tasked me with finding him a body. It must be young, and healthy, and have cultivation. The candidate must be perfect. His satisfaction will mean blessing me with an easy cultivation.”
Xu Hei was committed to his mission.
Though getting a live one would be a pain. So Xu Hei decided to copy the black dog and dig graves.
He spotted a cemetery on his way to the shrine. He’d try his luck there.
…
As for the so-called Mountain God, it hid in the tribute, the mouse, his soul withering.
“Curse that bloody animal! What did I do to have him enter my path?”
He was no mountain god, but an old demonic cultivator from two centuries ago, the Wandering Heavenly Devil.
His soul hid in that statue and used the people’s prayers to leverage on their faith to survive to this day, but due to his inherent dark nature, it made the shrine feel haunted, and it slowly fell to ruin as no one came again.
At least recovering for two hundred years gave him enough energy to possess someone.
Last year he got a human pill and a Daoist visiting his home and wanted to do just that. But luck had it that Xu Hei beat him to it by eating them.
The snake even ate a sliver of his soul power.
The mighty Wandering Heavenly Devil’s soul power was almighty alright. Just a sliver was enough for a beast to become a sentient demon.
The next chance came when the Chen clan’s young miss and her killer entered the shrine. He tried possessing them as well.
But that blasted Xu Hei beat them to death!
He might not have eaten them, but then a mangy dog showed up to finish the job, getting another sliver of his soul power, thus becoming sentient.
Twice his chances were taken away, and twice he lost a sliver of soul power.
On the third time, he wasn’t so hasty. Until his statue was in ruins and was forced to take Mu Lei’s body, only for Xu Hei to burn it to ashes.
The Wandering Heavenly Devil was almost mad from rage. He’d never suffered so much in his life. His hatred of Xu Hei was impossible to describe.
What took the cake was Xu Hei’s oblivious nature, thinking so highly of himself in his misplaced belief that the Mountain God gave him attention.
“Just you wait. Once I get my body, you’ll be the first I’ll take care of!”
Wandering Heavenly Devil’s rage spiked once more.
…
In the cemetery outside Chen Town, Xu Hei scanned the place with his Divine Sense, checking every tomb for the perfect body.
He found with regret that they were all bones, not suitable. He should look for those recently buried.
Some of the tombs were dug up, with no corpse inside. A body snatcher!
The black dog came to mind.
“Mountain God gave me just one hour. I need to hurry.” Xu Hei was getting anxious, just wanting to finish his mission.
But where was he supposed to find a young and healthy body with cultivation?
Then it hit him. He used Earthen Motion at once and burrowed underground. There, he waited, without using his sight or Divine Sense.
Xu Hei was still like a statue, not letting out a single intent. His hearing was the only thing working.
A clatter came from afar, not of a human, but a quadruped animal. A dog!
The dog reached a tomb and started digging.
Xu Hei knew it was that black dog.
“Ha-ha, I kept Divine Sense disabled and didn’t even look at him. Let’s see you escape this time!”
Xu Hei knew the dog had beyond sharp senses, so he was ready. This time, he’d catch it.
“Now!”
Xu Hei used Earthen Motion at full speed as he jumped out.
The black dog was digging his next meal when he felt the horrible danger.
He was too late to react.
“Awo!”
The dog whined as Xu Hei jumped from underground and sailed three hundred meters through the air, right at the dog and capturing him.
It was the same sentient black dog from before.
The black dog’s eyes were now red and vicious, and there was the creepy black energy above it. He clearly ate his fair share of corpses and suffered their resentment.
“Awo!”
The black dog tried to bite, but Xu Hei had higher cultivation. Putting a bit of a squeeze on the dog made him squeal from all his bones creaking.
“Please spare me!” The black dog squealed.
Xu Hei used the Beast Trapping Ring to wrap around his neck.
The black dog didn’t move.
Xu Hei halted as well and gave the black dog another look.
What he saw made his eyes shine. “He wants me to find him a body. Well he’s healthy, young, dashing, and also has cultivation…”
The more he looked, the more he found the black dog to be the perfect target for his mission.
The aura, the body, simply perfect!
Xu Hei would go as far as to say there couldn’t be a better vessel.
He grabbed the black dog and hasted toward Mountain God’s shrine.
“What do you want? What are you doing?”
The black dog wailed, a bad feeling creeping in. A shame the top-grade magic treasure ruined all chances of escape.
Xu Hei arrived at the shrine ruins.
He put the black dog down before the crater, looking mighty pleased with himself. “Mountain God Lord, as you requested, a body! Look, it has everything you wanted!”
Xu Hei was in glee for completing his task and in time too.
The Wandering Heavenly Devil, however, felt his mind blanking out.
[You call that a body? A damn mongrel?]
[Are you toying with me? You want me to possess a mutt?]
He thought he had a grasp of Xu Hei’s inferior intelligence so he limited his request, but the dumb snake went ahead and proved he had overestimated by a long shot.
He forgot to limit it to humans alone.
“Bastard, why won’t you just die? Drop dead already!” The Wandering Heavenly Devil raged with every fiber of his soul.
Xu Hei blinked, lost. [Was I wrong? Didn’t I complete the mission?]
The Wandering Heavenly Devil was speechless.
Xu Hei was very careful in his picking, and very nimble, so why the hell couldn’t he have figured out this one simple thing? He needed a human, not a dog!
His soul was close to scattering, being so long out of the statue. He needed a body now, or he’d sleep for another few centuries.
The Wandering Heavenly Devil started with a sudden realization, looking at the dog with amazement.
“A wight’s body? Is this a coincidence? He has the same constitution as my old body.”
The Wandering Heavenly Devil gave the black dog another look, shocking him further.
After much hesitation, he sighed.
[So what if it’s a dog? At least it has my old constitution. It beats having my soul vanishing.]
At worst, he’d just have to recover his cultivation and look for another vessel.
His soul left the mouse and entered the forehead of the black dog.
The dog froze stiff, his red eyes losing their luster.
As the soul and body melded, and this time with no one interfering, it went smoothly.
Too easy in fact, leaving Wandering Heavenly Devil speechless.
As his soul took hold, the Beast Trapping Ring came undone.
Xu Hei rushed over to grab it, then turned at the dog.
“Mountain God Lord, if that is all, I’ll be leaving.”
Xu Hei felt something was off and wanted to get as far away as possible.
