The focused Fireball became pitch-black, the air warping from the heat and the ground melting.
Xu Hei struck despite the man’s unknown defensive items, wanting to burn him to ashes.
“Die!”
The black flame hurtled at the wall while using Attraction to pin his target in place.
“Eh?”
The beggar behind the wall snapped his eyes open, having sensed the attack, just as the basic magical art, Attraction, was used.
A late Qi Refining cultivator like him could shirk it off like nothing, but that nothing was enough to slow him down.
“Ha!”
The beggar moved as the fireball exploded behind and revealed layers of shields glimmering around him, from the defensive magic treasures on him.
This fireball wasn’t your average firestarter, containing raw power enough to crack the shield.
The pendant dangling on his chest snapped with the shield, turning into a ball of water with him at its center to block the searing heat.
The beggar relaxed somewhat, glancing at the molten devastation behind. A talisman was activated and a maelstrom was sent for his life.
“What the hell?”
The beggar grimaced as thunder, fire, windblades, and many other magical arts were there to welcome him. He reacted by taking out a copper bell, but three dark golden scales made short work of any defense.
“No~!”
The beggar wailed, engulfed by every attack.
Boom~!
The earth shook under the onslaught, bringing down the shabby houses around.
It all happened so fast, that Zhao Yiduo had no chance to see his attacker, a mere mid Awareness demon.
He planned to have his puppet team up with Yu Qiang to kill the dog. Even if he failed, he’d be free of that annoying Yu Qiang. But then this happened, beyond his expectations.
“Fireball! Fireball!”
“Thunder Seal!”
Xu Hei gave his all at the ruins.
His Divine Sense told him the enemy was hanging by a thread.
“Thunder!”
Xu Hei sent lightning bolts where his senses guided him, uncaring of the shaking earth and the destruction he caused. Even the area outside the eastern part felt it.
River Town was fraught with killings now and then, but they were nice enough to keep it quiet and not draw attention and cause panic among the mortals.
“Which gangs are fighting?”
“It feels like twenty late Qi Refining cultivators are duking it out.”
The people turned their attention to the eastern area.
After long minutes of exertion, Xu Hei was left panting on the ground, the faint aura gone at last.
But even that wasn’t enough to curb his paranoia, the snake having gone above and beyond in making sure there was no trace left. He then put on an Invisible Talisman and crawled over to the gapping hole he made.
What was once a ruined street with decrepit houses was replaced by this conspicuous crater scarred from countless bombs. The target was nothing but dust, as were his possessions.
And yet, some things, imagine that, survived. A broken copper bell, a silver inner armor, a black jade, and some piece of metal.
And not to forget, Xu Hei’s three scales.
The snake stashed his haul and gulped his scales before fleeing the crime scene.
“The stuff must be good for something to survive after all that.” Xu Hei was excited.
He was more than positive the beggar was the dashing youth puppet’s controller.
The guy had so many aces but Xu Hei outsmarted him before he could take advantage of his superiority and escape.
“This guy is so scared of death that he’s using his puppet to fool others. Ha-ha, my kind of guy!” Xu Hei grinned.
…
Hei Huang’s paws held the two’s heads, scouring their minds.
“Shit, a fake!”
He threw Zhao Yiduo and cursed.
Yu Qiang, however, offered more.
“At least this guy only grasped the first stage of the puppet art. Stingy Sky Effigy Sect, not even giving their disciples the full cultivation method.” Hei Huang’s mouth twitched.
Taking over a dog’s body meant he couldn’t join the human society, needing to find himself a human avatar.
Since re-possessing was far in the future, he settled for a backup plan, a puppet. Hence the idea to fight Sky Effigy Sect’s disciples.
Killing and soul searching was the quickest way, but all he got was the puppet art’s first stage, making some mechanical beasts.
“That noise nearby means Xu Hei came over.”
Destroying the bodies, Hei Huang donned the black robe and vanished.
…
Back in the inn, the Blood Wolf Gang crammed the small room and the location, having contingency to contingencies.
The boss was pale and had a creepy gaze, thirsty for blood. He was the owner of that tavern, Xue Lang.
“Boss, The midget is on his way!” A man in black rushed over to report.
Xue Lang shot to his feet and sneered. “Perfect. He ran out on his bill and now I’ll make him spit everything out. I’m going to bloody the floor with his kneeling!”
Minutes later found Xue Lang’s bleeding knees soaking the floor and slamming his forehead on the ground.
Xu Hei hung on a beam, in his own world.
“Senior, spare me! I am an ignorant fool to defy you. I’ll do anything you ask of me!”
Xue Lang kowtowed and slapped himself, regret consuming his heart for having the dumb idea of messing with these monsters.
He took the other for a weakling for fleeing after dining, but time proved who the real weakling was.
“Give me one reason why I should,” Hei Huang spoke.
Xue Lang shuddered and took out a paper and a token. “This is the tavern’s deed and my token. There’s also the Sky Effigy Sect’s incense to contact them…”
Xue Lang took out everything from his storage bag.
“Fine, you can go.” Hei Huang nodded.
“Many thanks, Senior!”
Xue Lang crawled out at top speed.
A fireball fell on him.
“I didn’t say you could leave, only he,” Xu Hei said.
Xue Lang was burned to a crisp.
Xu Hei picked up the stuff on the floor.
Hei Huang said, “Did you handle Zhao Yiduo?”
“Zhao what now?”
“That Sky Effigy Sect disciple.”
“What’re you talking about?” Xu Hei faked.
Hei Huang had to be open as well, telling all that happened to get the snake to admit it.
Coming clean that he was skimming the treasures but also helping Xu Hei with pills ought to make up for it, no?
“Stop wasting time and run. Since you killed two of their disciples, I’m out of here!” Xu Hei said.
