News of a Foundation Establishment elder’s death shock the Chu Kingdom’s southern area, something that hadn’t happen in years.

Unfettered Sect, Augury Sect, and Prophetic Sect proclaimed their innocence out of their own volition, providing alibis to their experts out of the sect at the time.

The Snake Catchers Sect loomed overhead, obviously beneath it to remove a subordinate’s elder and cover it up on top of things.

All drew their own conclusions in regards to this baffling event.

“He did it! I’m sure of it!”

Chen Daoling’s eyes flashed scarlet, recalling the near demise he had from fighting that demon snake.

Those strange scales ignored any defense, a memory he wouldn’t soon forget. Ye Haichuan was careless and fell for them as well.

“The demon snake is nimble and insidious like a fox. No other suspect fits,” Chen Daoling muttered.

On Unfettered Sect’s side, it was believed to be the flying black dog’s handiwork, the chicken thief.

The Shifting Mountain Sect performed its own investigation in the matter.

Two other inner disciples died alongside Ye Haichuan. The elder went out at their call for help.

As for the contents of the call, it was unknown, but it was simple to discern the involvement of a man-eating demon at the scene of the crime.

The Snake Catchers Sect issued a bounty for the black demon snake and demon dog.

The capture of one of them would be rewarded with a hundred spirit stones, while any information meant fifty.

All factions stirred at the rich rewards.

Sects, from big to small, sent their inner disciples to scour the forest. Fifty spirit stones was a fortune many cultivators wouldn’t see in their lifetimes.

Xu Hei woke up in the cave hidden in a concealed valley deep in the forest. His skin was healed, his flesh mended, and his strength returned.

His muscles had a black sheen to them, astonishing toughness, and were even stronger than before.

The tail’s scales extended further as well, covering a fifth of his entire body.

[Just what cultivation method is Xu Hei practicing? The speedy recovery, and those scales…]

Hei Huang couldn’t read the snake.

His initial impression of the snake was that he had a cultivation method on par with his, the Heavenly Devil Art. Looking closer, he gave it way too little credit. He reckoned the art had to belong to some ancient and forgotten sect since eons ago, specialized for snakes.

[A fitting art works best.] Hei Huang gave up on his plan to offer his own.

His only worry lay in the mighty art’s condition. Was it complete?

Training in a fragmented art would stunt one’s growth at some point.

The puppet cultivation method was the best example, having only its first stage on hand. It could be a godlike art for all he cared, but having no way forward removed that advantage.

Boom!

The Demon God Cauldron shuddered within Xu Hei, sucking up the world’s Spiritual Energy like a vortex and making the droplets shrink constantly.

“Late Awareness Stage.”

Hei Huang widened, taking out a flag to set up an array along with many pills.

The brutal battle came as a blessing in disguise, giving Xu Hei the chance he needed to advance in the most natural way possible.

While a fair amount of time later then Hei Huang’s promised month, Xu Hei’s foundation was so solid, he might as well be at such a level even before reaching it.

After three days, the Spiritual Energy droplets inside the Demon God Cauldron converged into a finger-sized ball of liquid Spiritual Energy.

A tiny current flowed within it, splitting like the branches of a tree and connecting to every meridian inside Xu Hei.

The Spiritual Energy water ball was Xu Hei’s core. When the ball filled the entire Demon God Cauldron, he would be at peak Awareness Stage.

Only then could he attempt compressing it to form his spiritual foundation.

Xu Hei opened his eyes, feeling his True Qi doubling in his veins, transforming the same way he did when he reached mid-level.

[7th layer of Awareness Stage.]

The helpless feeling he got when he faced the Foundation Establishment cultivator didn’t fade with his progress. The all-encompassing reach, the decimating magical arts, all were impossible to overcome.

[Not enough! This little strength isn’t enough!]

The killing of Ye Haichuan was a result of pure luck and pure coincidence. Xu Hei held no certainty he could repeat the impossible feat.

“Take this large snake.”

Hei Huang threw him a large snake puppet, the same one from before, but now restored.

Xu Hei nodded. “Thanks.”

He only managed to get the cultivator thanks to Hei Huang’s Invisible Talisman and the puppet.

Xu Hei placed the three storage bags on the ground.

Hei Huang was sensible to leave. “I’ll go for a walk.”

“No, here’s your share,” Xu Hei said.

Hei Huang’s eyes lit up, swinging back with a twist of his rear and plopping it down with a grin on his face.

“You two should come in as well.” Xu Hei shouted.

The white snake and wolf king rushed in in excitement and sat like good little kids.

They had since recovered and gotten stronger.

The wolf king was already at the 3rd layer of the Awareness Stage.

The amazing part was the white snake’s advancement to the 4th.

She reached the mid-level with no extras whatsoever. Even Xu Hei was shocked at her insane speed, faster than his.

The little white snake stared at him with twinkles in her eyes. “What do I call you, King, Senior Brother, or…”

“Stop! Just call me Xu Hei.” He interjected before she went too far, but the damage was done.

Hei Huang grinned. “Little Xu, let her finish. Or are you two in a compromising relationship?”

Xu Hei kept a stone face. “I change my mind. You don’t get a share.”

“Eh? Come one, what did I say?”

“Scram!”

After a round of bickering, Hei Huang gave up.

“Xu Hei…” The white snake’s eyes shone. “Then can I be Xu Bai?”(Tamon: bai means white.)

Xu Hei pondered it over.

This was a serious problem.

“Hey, you even have the same name! Somethin’s fishy!” Hei Huang poked holes.

Xu Hei bit on the dog’s leg, making him yelp and warn him.

“Fine, you’re Xu Bai.” Xu Hei agreed.

The little white snake was over the moon, muttering in excitement, “I’m Xu Bai. I’m Xu Bai. I have a name. I have a name…”
