[Who put her up to making pills?]
Xu Hei had a sinking feeling.
He watched a soot-covered white snake crawl her way out of the crumbled cave with a cracked furnace on her back.
Right behind her was a shambling Ergou, with drooping eyelids and tongue out.
“I-it wasn’t me.” Xu Hei defended himself in reflex.
“Where did the furnace come from, thin air? You have no excuse!” Hei Huang raged.
Xu Hei looked at the furnace with sorrow. This was a Foundation Establishment spiritual treasure, but thanks to the cracks covering its every inch, it should last a couple more times before its glorious demise, probably.
Xu Hei opened his mouth.
“What time did that make it?”
“That was the fifth refining of today. If you include the last few days, I forgot how many there were.” Hei Huang cursed.
He’d never met such a ‘talent’ in his life. Every batch had to have a pop to it, regardless of how much knowledge he fed the snake. Even when he made the pills himself, the slightest help from the snake would have an explosive result. It was like the furnace combusted the moment she touched it.
“Why blame me when you kept at it?” Xu Hei bit back.
Hei Huang was stumped.
After he came back from his trip, he found Xu Bai liking alchemy and had the top wood spirit root to match, coupled with an unyielding will. So he set her on the right track, but how was he to know that every hint made it worse? There was also the issue of not knowing when to call it quits.
He was an obstinate fellow, never giving up when he set his mind to do something. Even the worst seed would grow into something, only this something ended up more crooked and twisted than a snake with an itch.
“I-I did it. I made pills.”
Xu Bai hung her head with guilt at seeing them argue.
“Eh?”
Hei Huang lit up, surprised this particular furnace popping netted pills.
Xu Hei was just as curious.
Xu Bai carefully tipped the furnace to let a pitch-black pill roll on the ground.
It was warped and creepy, to say nothing of the acrid scent it gave off.
Hei Huang just stared. “What pill is this?”
“The Minor Boost Pill. Xu Hei taught me, and I finally made it,” Xu Bai replied.
Xu Hei’s mouth twitched, staring at the black shriveled pill; never in his wildest dream would he have tied it to the Minor Boost Pill.
Hei Huang picked it up with a smile. “Since you taught her, eat it. She put her heart into it.”
Xu Hei shrank back as he violently shook his head.
“No, no, I’ve always been a snake of modesty. You take it.”
“Why so polite? Aren’t we all friends here?”
“You can have it. I won’t appreciate it.”
“No, you!”
“You!”
Hei Huang shoved it over, only for Xu Hei to shove it back. The two demons fought over their boundless modesty.
Xu Bai blinked. “You don’t have to be so modest. I can just make more for everyone to enjoy.”
“NO!”
The two finally came to an agreement.
The black demons turned their attention to the drugged-out-of-his-mind Ergou on the ground, coming to a rare consensus.
They took the pill and walked over.
Ergou sensed the danger even from his numb state. He up and jumped to his feet and wailed for his dear life.
Like a dog with its tail stepped on, he shrank back and whined in the most gut-wrenching manner.
Xu Hei gulped. [Those are ingrained reflexes. Is the pill that horrible?]
Xu Hei kicked himself for not having the bright idea to spare at least one cultivator. They’d make for good guinea pigs.
“I’ll go get a demon.” Xu Hei left.
Hei Huang stared at the pill in his hand and sniffed the black mist oozing out. His hair stood on end, and he rushed to seal it in a jade box.
Xu Bai was apprehensive. She hoped to help, but her clumsiness got the better of her every time. Only now did she succeed.
She poured all her hope into that pill.
…
Xu Hei was back in no time with a large fish and a monkey, both at the 7th layer of the Awareness Stage, trapped with Demon Bindings.
His first intention was to get a demon snake, but they weren’t so easy to spot, especially at the same level. After a round of searching, he ended up with these two.
“Let’s try it on the fish first.”
Hei Huang took out the abominable pill and scraped a speck of dust into the large fish’s mouth.
The fish was covered in black mist on the spot, its True Qi soaring so fast it reached the 8th layer in minutes.
“It works. It’s the Minor Boost Pill’s effect.” Hei Huang cheered.
“It really is!”
Xiao Hei was amazed that it had the same effect as the Minor Boost Pill.
And that was from just a speck. How many layers would he pass if he ate it all?
[This is the genius of a top wood spirit root!]
Xu Hei didn’t get to enjoy the discovery, for the fish’s belly had bulged out in two areas.
The flesh kept growing and growing… into naked feet.
“Uh…”
Hei Huang gawked, Xu Hei’s face froze in a dumb look.
The heck?
A fish growing legs?!
The large fish squeaked out of nowhere, slipping out of the binds, and dashed like an Olympic athlete, even kicking up dust behind it.
Gone like the wind.
That was one nightmare they couldn’t unsee. It was so horrible the two demons took ages to regain their faculties.
“The fish… evolved?” Xu Hei blurted.
Hei Huang’s mouth twitched. “The hell it did! That’s a mutation!”
This Wandering Heavenly Devil had seen his fair share of evil cultivators, too many in fact, devoted to the madness of creating freakish beings. Even the kind refining the Demon Pill, turning themselves into unliving abominations.
But a fish growing legs that ran off? That was disturbingly new… and fresh.
He gave Xu Bai a blank look. [Is she the devil’s apostle?]
“Try it on the monkey. Since it resembles humans, we might get an insight into its effect on humans.” Xu Hei offered.
Hei Huang went and stuffed the monkey’s mouth with a tiny piece of the pill this time.
Wu~
The monkey struggled, knowing the pill was laced with something, if not filled, but Hei Huang was having none of that. He slapped a paw on its mouth and the monkey gulped it down.
Its body was covered in black mist, and its face hovered between green and red. The pill worked its magic and got him to the 8th layer.
That wasn’t all. Due to being fed a tiny piece, the monkey reached the 9th layer two hours later.
Its bones crackled as it grew. Its legs lengthened, its tail shrunk, its hair fell off, and its face warped.
“Evolving again?” Xu Hei started.
Hei Huang blinked, staring hard at the ‘evolving’ monkey.
