Chapter 57, Shameless and Spineless Snipe
by SilavinTranslator: Tamon
The mother mammoth couldn’t dodge the lightning strike, but if there was one thing these demons had, that was vitality, thick hide, and robustness. It would not die, only heavily wounded.
But the sudden development caused her to panic, unaware as to who else came after them.
“What?”
“Enemy!”
The two 7th layer Qi Refining disciples paled and halted.
The death of their stronger companion led them to take decisive action, turning around and bolting. They even covered all bases by splitting up and using protective items to shield their backs.
They spared nothing, be it talismans, pills, magic treasures, everything was employed to survive.
Xu Hei sneered to himself, their fates sealed the moment he decided to act. He was never one to do things by half measures.
They managed a couple of meters before discovering the many small lizards surrounding them.
“Kill them!” Xu Hei shouted.
Boom~
The lizards’ mouths spewed white lights from every direction at the two.
As late Qi Refining cultivators, these attacks couldn’t do them in. Their magic treasures activated with a flash and blocked it all, despite ending up somewhat miserable.
They were ambushed, but all they had to do was get to Hua Yuntian and they’d live, a future forever sealed.
Too bothered with fleeing, they didn’t discover some of the lizards flying at them with a talisman stuck to their bodies, igniting in their face.
“That’s…”
“High-grade Explosive Talisman!”
“Back, back!”
The two shrieked in horror.
Back? There was no back to retreat to, not when the booby-trapped lizards came from everywhere.
Boom~!
Their shields ripped in the explosions while the white lights gave them extra breathing holes.
They never stopped shrieking in agony and pain even as they breathed their last.
Xiao Hei snatched their storage bags while sending a lizard to incinerate the bodies, or what’s left of it, with a Fireball Talisman.
Low-grade talismans were useless in a fight at this point, but not obsolete. They could still clean up the place.
“The small lizard’s attack has no variation whatsoever. Using talismans is a must, but high-grade ones are so few and wasteful.
“I’ll stick to using stronger beast puppets next time, like the large frog and snake…”
Xu Hei assessed the fight while leaving the crime scene. Not about his first kill, since it was flawless, but the other two, making things complicated.
If the two were a wee bit sharper, or with better aces like Ye Haichuan’s Heaven Fleeing Talisman, Xu Hei could only watch them go.
“Too few contingencies made this a fluke.” Xu Hei shook his head.
…
Hua Yuntian was getting impatient.
“What’s taking those idiots so long?” He snapped.
“Their high cultivation should make quick work of those demons. They should be here by now. Or did they hog everything?” One female cultivator said.
The male mammoths were hanging by a thread, covered in pikes, rent by a flying sword, and sporting wounds that would kill any average beast.
Two of them already died, but the rest fought on, even sending out sound waves.
Their piercing trumpet sounds blew the dust in three hundred meters. They rattled the cultivators’ ears and minds, making some bleed from their ears.
“I’ll take a look.” The female cultivator flew after the trio.
Hua Yuntian let her, wanting to know what the hell was keeping them.
Whoosh!
The female cultivator became the target of an Earth Spike just meteres away.
“Damn it!”
Hua Yuntian grimaced and threw his flying sword with lightning speed to sever the spike, but Xu Hei’s calculations were never wrong.
The cut off Earth Spike’s upper piece continued its trajectory and ran the female cultivator through. She ended up falling from fifteen meters with a sickening crunch. Gone before she even hit the dirt.
It all happened too fast for her to even activate her magic treasures, let alone dodge. Another life faded from this world, just like that.
The others froze in shock, with Hua Yuntian the first to react with a blazing fury.
“Earth Spike? Shifting Mountain Sect? No, not possible! Who the hell was it? Show yourself!”
Hua Yuntian raged, covering everything in three hundred meters with his Divine Sense.
The dying male mammoths looked baffled.
Xu Hei slapped an Invisible Talisman on him the moment he struck, and becoming still as a statue underground.
“His Divine Sense isn’t as strong as Ye Haichuan’s.” Xu Hei calculated.
His earlier observations showed that despite Hua Yuntian’s Foundation Establishment cultivation, he was far from being at Ye Haichuan’s level.
The latter’s magical arts, flying sword, and Divine Sense left Hua Yuntian in the dust.
Even in terms of cunningness, Hua Yuntian couldn’t compare. He was more reckless and never in control of the situation, having let some mammoths slip by.
“So not all Foundation Establishment cultivators are the same. Nevertheless, he might be weak for real or just faking it, but that’s no excuse to be hasty.”
Xu Hei was on guard, always overestimating his opponents.
For kid to reach the Foundation Establishment Stage at such a young age spoke of the youth’s talent, i.e. his aces.
“Come out! Show yourself!” The kid kept barking.
Hua Yuntian’s eyes were bloodshot and panting, the mammoths no longer on his mind. He stared ahead with a dark look. “What is sir’s goal? Why hide away like a coward when you can just state your purpose!”
The others shared lost looks, but now back to back to fend off any sudden attack.
Xu Hei came up with a scheme.
He had a small lizard release its light attack from its spot.
Boom!
A rock got pulverized.
Hua Yuntian’s hand snapped into action and a sword hacked at the area while he spilled Visionary Dust all over.
The sword wave whistled for a hundred meters while the Visionary Dust caught nothing.
“Despicable and shameless coward! Have you no dignity?” Hua Yuntian knew he was toyed with, incensing him further.
The rest knew to keep silent.
Xiao Hei used another lizard, triggering Hua Yuntian to rush over this time.
“Now!”
Xu Hei used Earth Spike.
Pff!
A 7th layer Qi Refining disciple found himself impaled, the spike punching through his armor, magic treasure’s shield, and everything, like it was paper.
It was a cruel way to go.
Fear and terror gripped their hearts, and everyone scrambled near Hua Yuntian.
He was outraged and humiliated, crushing the lizard distracting him to pieces.
“Mechanical Puppet Art? Earth Spike? Who the hell are you?”
Hua Yuntian was losing it. His shallow experience was so limited, that he didn’t know how to deal with deceitful and cunning opponents who disregarded honor and rules. The enemy toyed with him and even killed two of his people in the meantime.
He could already see the enemy grinning from the shadows at his plight.
His eyes scanned the area as his Divine Sense scoured every inch.
Rumble~
Thunderous explosions came from afar, shuddering the world with each boom.
It wasn’t an earthquake, but the space that quivered.
A flood of terrifying demon energy swept the area and darkened the sky.
The wounded mammoths blew their trumpet in excitement and called for help.
