Chapter 61, The Passing of an Affectionate Couple
by SilavinTranslator: Tamon
“He was once a man, turning himself into a woman cultivator through some unknown method. I’ll leave out the rest so it won’t break your mind.”
Hei Huang snickered.
Xu Hei gulped, keeping any questions to himself.
“Hei Huang, in the off chance that the plan fails and we’re made, how do we escape?”
Xu Hei needed contingency for the worst case before committing to anything. Self-confidence had nothing to do with it, but caution, covering all bases.
“Lighten up; once I dangle a little something, those Augury Sect broads won’t touch us.” Hei Huang was supremely confident.
Xu Hei didn’t push, having the minimum trust not to pry into all his secrets.
…
Up ahead was Augury Mountain.
The mountain was packed with spiritual beasts. A brief Divine Sense scan told Xu Hei of many spiritual cats, dogs, and rabbits, all fluffy and adorable.
As for any other species, there was none.
It wasn’t limited to animals, with the vegetation having been eaten to the roots, leaving the mountain bald as a coot.
“Are you sure your way is gonna get us in?” Xu Hei was having second thoughts.
“See this? This settles everything!”
Hei Huang took out a white powder, turning his fur snow-white, glossy, and flawless. Then he ate a pill that shrank his size.
From a large, black, and mangy dog, he became one cute little white puppy.
His aura switched from the creepy evil vibe to that of an average puppy. Especially those big, suggestive eyes; they could melt ice caps.
Xu Hei was dumbstruck.
“That’s fricking… nasty.” Xu Hei grimaced and looked away.
Hei Huang ran off, and a yelp echoed.
A ghastly wound appeared on his hind leg, deep and bloody.
“Awo!”
Hei Huang squeaked and whimpered, drawing many small spiritual beasts’ attention.
Two cats saw him as a threat and started scratching him, but Hei Huang was passive.
Two female disciples heard the commotion and cried out upon this gruesome scene. “Stop!”
They drove away the cats.
“What a cute little puppy. Aww, look how hurt he is.”
“We have to take him in and heal him.”
One of the two took Hei Huang then and there.
Xu Hei gawked at the dumb play from beneath the ground.
[That fricking worked?]
[The girls are mid Qi Refining cultivators, seasoned experts by any standard, so why did they fall for it so easily?]
Xu Hei couldn’t figure it out, so he had to give credit to Hei Huang’s acting. [The furball has no shame!]
The other girl picked the fighting spiritual cats and gave them a tongue-lashing before feeding them.
All the spiritual beasts on the mountain ran over and ate with gusto, making sure to leave nothing behind.
Xu Hei could tell the two female cultivators focused on looking after spiritual beasts. They were a rare breed of friendly humans that adored animals.
Xu Hei had no animosity towards them. Would anyone hate a harmless human?
Xiao Hei gave it some thought and let out a small snake puppet with a deep wound, making it look as pitiful as possible.
It was one of the puppets Hei Huang made on the way here. The puppet was a 1st layer Awareness Stage, but with a speed belying that.
Xu Hei was curious if the gals would take pity on him as well.
A spiritual cat spotted it and lunged for the little snake. Xiao Hei controlled the puppet to hiss and thrash.
“What’s this?”
The female cultivator looked over, but her face paled and shrieked.
“Ahh! A demon snake!”
Her yell was so sharp and so terrified, it was like she saw untold horrors.
Xu Hei was stumped.
“Drop dead! Die!”
The female cultivator slashed the little snake with her sword on the spot.
Xu Hei’s face fell.
[Damn hypocrites! You save Hei Huang, but not a snake? Aren’t they both spiritual beasts? Why kill it?]
Snakes were a threat to humans, but the little snake had the weakest cultivation while the female cultivator was in the mid Awareness Stage, practically harmless.
Xu Hei couldn’t figure it out. He could only blame it for not having fur to fit these humans’ type.
Clang!
The little snake ducked underground, dodging the blow and returning to Xiao Hei’s storage bag.
He couldn’t just let it go to waste. It took two days to refine.
“Little Fang, what’s wrong?” A male cultivator flew over in a rush.
His robes revealed he was an Unfettered Sect disciple.
Fang Qingxue threw herself in his embrace, pointing where the snake had been and bawled. “Brother Li, it was so scary. A snake just appeared!”
The youth’s eyes shone and sensed Xu Hei underground. He rubbed her hair, his voice soothing. “There, there. The snake must’ve really scared you. I’ll skin it and feed the cats with it.”
“Yay, Brother Li’s the best!” Fang Qingxue switched tunes faster than flipping papers.
The youth sneered and used a Fireball Talisman in Xu Hei’s direction.
The earth blew up, and a thirty-meter-wide crater was gouged out.
He took out a thin sword and stabbed where Xu Hei was underground, taking him for the snake puppet.
“The plan takes precedence.”
Xu Hei sighed. The youth was in the 8th layer and could kill him then and there, but he’d rather not make too much of a scene before he got word from Hei Huang.
He dived deeper, avoiding the repeated attacks with ease.
“Eh?”
Fang Qingxue frowned at the nimbleness of this 1st layer little snake.
“Let’s see how long you can dodge!”
The youth was enraged, switching to a golden longbow and aiming an arrow at Xu Hei.
“Top magic item!”
It held the power to threaten a peak Awareness demon.
The bow was so strong it bumped a mid Awareness cultivator’s strength by a few layers. To think he’d see such a treasure in these random people.
Xu Hei could no longer be passive, not wanting to end up skewered.
“Die.”
The youth released the arrow, piercing the earth on its way for Xu Hei.
“Earth Armor!”
A yellow halo covered him in time to form a thick armor. The arrow chipped the armor and merely scratched his skin.
“Wha…”
The two cultivators gawked realizing the seriousness of the situation.
Pff!
Two needles shot out of the ground.
And… and nothing.
He heard Hei Huang’s voice from a sending talisman. “It’s done. Come on in.”
Xu Hei relaxed. [Just in time.]
