“…”
“Are you alright, Lady Violet?”
“Yeah… I’m fine…”
Having arrived at the mansion, Lady Violet felt dizzy, after which she sat down on the nearby chair, put her right palm to her forehead and tiredly closed her eyes.
After visiting the church, I showed her around various places in Shiki and during that time we met a lot of people who congratulated us, along with various kinds of ‘troublemakers’.
“Tea or coffee, which one would you prefer?”
“Tea, please…”
“Here you go then. Please feel free to add sugar yourself.”
I brought one cup of tea and coffee each and handed over the tea.
I put sugar and cream in my coffee and took a sip… yeah, it looks like it’ll take a while until I can brew it like Gray. It’s serviceable, but when I compare myself to Gray, as expected I’m bad at brewing it.
Lady Violet drank the coffee as I handed it over, without adding anything to it, and after seemingly finding it slightly bitter, she added sugar. However, that bitterness seemed to have distracted her somewhat. Then, after a small inaudible sigh, she started mumbling towards nobody in particular.
“One person wearing a black mage’s robe congratulated me while laughing strangely. Another one told me to come to him if I was ever injured, promising to heal me after observing my injury. Then there was that person who proposed to me on our first meeting, and another person who bombarded me with incomprehensible jargon out of nowhere. Not to mention, there’s that matter of Ms. Cyan punching the archbishop… no, I shouldn’t make judgments so easily. They are all unique people. I mustn’t badmouth the people of the fief…”
“You don’t have to push yourself.”
The problem wasn’t in Cyan’s behavior, but rather in the fact that she punched the archbishop and sent him flying.
There is Orchid, who is obsessed with black magic. In addition, while his appearance and actions are suspicious, he’s a relatively good person.
There is also Ivory, who loves healing injuries. So much so that he gets excited during the process and almost got expelled from the medical field. He’s an excellent doctor who’s reluctantly staying here because he cannot return to the city until several years have passed.
There is Khaki, he came to Shiki because he got involved with too many women. He’s an idiot but he’s not a bad person. If the other person refuses his advances, he pulls back respectfully.
There is also Apricot, who is just a delusional edgelord so there’s no problem if you just leave him alone. Although, he can actually use magic, so he’s a relatively troublesome type of an edgelord with actual ability.
Anyway, Lady Violet met many problematic people. It’s not surprising she would be tired after being surrounded by many unique people. The capture targets she must have been close with at the academy must’ve been very unique too, but they’re probably on a different end of the spectrum.
“Also, what was that strange human-shaped lump of metal…?”
“It’s Robot. It’s very popular with children.”
“No, it was definitely not something you could write off with just that. Rather, what’s a robot?”
A robot is a robot. There is a person inside, but he’s just shy. He’s a robot who’s very popular with the elderly in town when carrying heavy loads or cutting down trees. His real name is Blonde, but he’s a robot.
By the way, in this world, machines are lost technology. It seems that the logic of how they work hasn’t been deciphered.
“Come to think of it, it’s already so late. Lady Violet, I’m going to cook dinner, so do you have any requests? We’ve received many things, so I should be able to accommodate you to some extent.”
Looking at the time, it was 6 p.m. It will be a little late if I start preparing dinner now, but if I don’t make it, we won’t be able to eat at all.
I finished drinking my coffee and headed towards the kitchen where I had Gray bring all the vegetable and meat I’d received as a wedding gift
“Hmm, something that’s easy to… Wait, you’re making it, Lord Clo?”
“Yes. Gray isn’t here and it’s my turn today.”
By the way, Gray is now out to return all the ‘energizing food’ to Khaki who secretly snuck them in. I’m gonna punch him the next time I see him.
“There is nobody else… who can cook, right? I heard that it was just you two.”
It’s natural for the commoners to cook, but nobles don’t cook much.
Even for Barons, it’s common to hire somebody to cook and those who cook are commonly not treated well. It’s different for royal palace chefs, but for nobles they’re seen as just Servant A.
But in this mansion Gray and I take turns to cook. Since I have the commoner sense of the 21st century ingrained in me, I didn’t really fit in with the values of not cooking. Thanks to that my parents didn’t look at me well though.
“Anyway, something easy to eat, was it? I was given some beefsteak plant, okra, and myoga… so I can mix them with tomatoes and make a salad…”
I don’t know if it’ll fit Lady Violet’s taste, but I’ll make it as delicious as possible. To be honest, with my cooking skills, I can only make it palatable, but the vegetables of Shiki are delicious, so it’ll be fine… it should be fine!
“Lord Clo.”
“Yes?”
As I was choosing which vegetables to use today, Lady Violet, who had finished drinking tea and put the cup on the table, spoke to me. I was about to stop what I was doing but I was told it was fine to continue, so although it was rude, we continued while I was preparing food.
“This so-called Shiki is a strange place.”
“I agree.”
“Are you not going to deny it?”
Rather than strange, I think it’s unusual. That being said, “Everybody is weird and strange in their own ways”. I’ve heard such a saying before so it would be meaningless to deny it.
“But what do you mean by strange?”
“No, I’m not sure how to say it. What I mean by strange is… there were some unique residents, but…”
You don’t have to push yourself. You can just say that they’re strange people.
“Most of the citizens of the fief congratulated us on our marriage. It’s strange. It’s not like I’d done anything. I haven’t been congratulated by people like this… since my engagement with His Highness was decided.”
Lady Violet muttered somewhat sadly, but perhaps thinking that she had said something bad, she immediately shook her head and tried to change her mood.
“No, I beg your pardon. Anyway, I’ve heard all sorts of rumors, but I don’t think it’s a bad place.”
“You don’t have to push yourself.”
“I don’t think that’s what the lord should say, Lord Clo.”
I also don’t think it’s a bad place now and it can even be called a good place. But I also think that it’ll take her some time to get used to it
“There are all kinds of people here, it’s really…”
… Is she remembering something else now?
I’d like to think this isn’t the case, but it would be nice if meeting many people didn’t remind her of what happened in the academy and it’s not because she wants to avoid the repetition of that, she’s telling herself that this is a good place.
As I was worrying about what to say, Gray returned to the mansion… wait a minute. Gray should’ve gone to return that, so why is he back with more luggage? No, the size is different so it should be something else.
“Lord Clo, after I returned food to Lord Khaki, I was given something else in return. What should I do with this?”
“Throw it away.”
I could tell it wouldn’t be anything decent even before looking at it. He really needs a beating.
“Lord Clo, you mustn’t disregard somebody’s good wIll. It’s a celebratory gift, so it’s too cruel to throw it away without looking at it… what’s this, a book? The cover has been painted over, what could it be…?”
“That’s right. I was told to open it only after I got home so I also don’t know what’s inside. I was told it was perfect for the newlyweds’ night–”
I stopped cooking and stole the book from the two.
Alright, time to go and punch him.
